Many different pro-life groups handle the situation of a crisis pregnancy differently. Some only focus on the abortion-minded. Some do not take a position on contraception. Some are politically oriented. We are none of the above. Let’s look at a client who came into one of our centers recently to see how our approach was significant in terms of the client’s spiritual journey.
The mom delivered a couple of months previously, so clearly, we were helping beyond the birth of the baby. We asked about the father of the baby, who was married in another country and not yet annulled, who was living with her. Because of our Catholic mission, we were able to share God’s plan for children and advocate for her to have as a goal to create that environment for her child and herself. We have seen far too many times, the excuse being that they are not able to get married for legal reasons, but we know good priests who will marry in the Church for people who are free to marry. This was not the current situation for this client, but she never heard from anyone that it was a sin to live with a man before marriage or about abstaining from sex until marriage. If it weren’t for our organization, the mother who was seeking material help for her baby, would not be informed about her living situation.
The other aspect of her situation was that as soon as she delivered her child, she was given a patch of contraception. The medical community, unless in a good Catholic OB/GYN practice, does not give the option of a Catholic solution to crisis pregnancies. This is another example of the difference between our pro-life organizations. If she had been in another organization that would not share the Truth about her using artificial contraception, she would not have been informed.
The legalization of contraception occurred 5 years before the legalization of abortion. The battle was lost on the legal front before legalized abortion because many, including some Catholics, believed that artificial contraception was the solution to crisis pregnancies. It is rare anymore to find Catholics who embrace the Catholic position on contraception and unless the statistics are measured by organizations that do not prescribe or recommend contraception, one would not know how ineffective the use of artificial contraception is – like we do.
Many organizations measure their success by how many people come to their organization to receive their services, and certainly, we would like more to learn from our approach, but Jesus taught us to feed the sheep and not count them. We consider the mother who came to us for help the beneficiary our Good Samaritan approach, and we let God judge us on our success.
